One was sold in 2014 for $190+charges Henry Deringer from Philadelphia, Pennsilvania designed and patented a single shot cap-lock, pocket pistol and was copied by a plethora of imitators. Derringer pistols, Colt cloverleaf and Liberty revolvers were manufactured in America during the eighteenth century. They were exceptionally small pocket pistols in various forms. In a previous era they could be considered as gentleman’s jewellery and were very popular. The Double Derringer designed by William H Elliot in 1865 was one of the most popular in history. This example of this type of pistol was imported by F.I.E. and is different to Elliot's Derringers as it has only one barrel. A spare round is kept in the second barrel’s position. These weapons normally have a double barrel. The barrel hinges up from a standing breech. A lever on the right side of the frame, below the trigger, latched the barrel(s) in the down position via a cam at the bottom of the barrel. Swinging the lever unlatched the barrel(s) allowing them to swing upward. Some have an ejector to lift out the spent cases. The trigger is of the unprotected spur type and the operation is single action with an external hammer and transfer bar. On double barrel models, the firing pin oscillates, operating on a cam, for successive shots to fire each barrel in turn. The hammer has a safety notch for carrying it.
