John Browning, GH Tansley and FC Chadwick collaborated to design the Woodsman. Colt manufactured the Woodsman (First named the Target Model) from 1915 to date. From this pistol the Match Target model developed and manufacturing started in June 1938. Series 2 saw the light late in 1947 with a longer grip frame and heavier barrel. The Colt Woodsman Target series3 were very popular and more than 150000 were sold when Series3 were discontinued in 1977. This is a single action pistol with a concealed hammer. The barrels are fixed to the frame and on the Match Target series 1 the back third of the barrel carried more weight in the shape of the frame. On the second series the full length of the barrel was the height of the frame which means the counter weight is built in under the barrel. The slide and breechblock is solid in front and the rear of the slide is closed to prevent gas leaks. The disconnector blocks the sear when the slide is not in battery. The sear spring is the only flat spring in the pistol. The fact that the lock-time is slow and the rear sight is fitted on the moving slide makes this popular old design not accurate enough to compete with modern target pistols. Manufacturing and finish is excellent. (Ref. Pistols and revolvers by JE Smith, Pistols of the world by Hogg and Weeks p77, Pistols of the World, by Ian Hogg, John Walter)
