The business, John MacPherson Sports Emporium was established in 1887, at an unknown address in Inverness. By the turn of the century the firm was named John Macpherson & Sons, and they were trading as gun and fishing tackle makers, taxidermists and furriers at The Sporting Stores, Inglis Street, Inverness. At some time the firm moved to 24 Church Street. A branch was opened in Kingussie in the 1920s. The bill was issued in 1913 and the illustrations act as an advertisement for the shop's trade. The billhead states 'Gun, Fishing Tackle Maker and Taxidermist......Complete Sports Outfitter.' Duncan MacPherson was recorded at 5 Drummond St, Inverness, circa 1894 and 7 Drummond St, c1897 – c1901. Their address for John MacPherson and sons were 6-8 Inglis St by 1955 - c1976. From about 1931, the firm sold lightweight 2 inch chambered 12 bores supplied to them by Skimin & Wood of Birmingham. John Macpherson sold shotguns under the names: The Bargate, The Barrage, The Clach, The Killer and The Royal. The name ‘The Angler’ was used on Kynoch made shotgun ammunition for John Macpherson before 1914. The firm also sold cartridges under their own name and under the names "Bargate", "Barrage", "Challenge" (post 1910), "Red Barrage" (post 1927), "Orange Royal" (post 1927), "Pheasant" (Ref. It is a double trigger, hammer gun of which the strikers are mounted slightly higher. The third bite of the action is of the Greener cross pin type. The mechanism is a bar action and carries 50% engraving with beaded fences. A Scott spindle (top lever) locks the barrels and action on double lumps. The lightly blued, Horseshoe Damascus, barrels are choked quarter and three quarter. The stock has a semi pistol grip and the fore end is held by a Deeley and Edge catch. It is classified as a antique in the USA. John Macpherson made shotguns under the names: The Bargate, The Barrage, The Clach, The Killer and The Royal. (ref.
