Henry Deringer from Philadelphia, Pennsilvania designed and patented a single shot cap-lock, pocket pistol and was copied by a plethora of imitators. Colt’s Patent Firearms Manufacturing (1847-1947)(1955-1964) Colts Manufacturing Company (1947-1955) Colt’s inc. Firearms Division (1964- ) The 1st and 2nd model Colt Derringers was manufactured 1870 – 1890 and the 3rd model 1871 – 1912. The 4th Model Derringer was manufactured 1959 – 1963 in the same form than before but the caliber was not in .41 Rim-fire but .22 short. Total production (D suffix) was about 89727 and total production (N suffix) about 22880. This little single shot pistol is very simple in operation. It has a blue barrel, with a nickel frame and tight curl walnut grips. Inside the cast iron barrel that swings to the left to load the cartridge, is a steel liner. A high spur hammer has to be cocked to fire the round with the spur trigger. This popular little Colt Derringer was copied by various manufacturers over many years and this represent one of many designs of small concealable single and double barrel pistols manufactured between 1880 and 1920. After the turn of the century manufacturing skills improved and tiny revolver revolvers and small automatic pistols were added to the miniature firearms.
